Verizon Android Cell Phone – RelayRides will be one of the first apps to be part of OnStar’s third-party developer initiative. OnStar is giving the green light to third-party app developers. The General Motors in-vehicle concierge announced this evening at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that it’s making its proprietary application program interface open for third-party app developers, giving them access to the OnStar ATOMS cloud server. (See CNET’s live blog of the OnStar event.) The first third-party app will be RelayRides, a peer-to-peer service in which users rent out their personalcars to other drivers in the area. A demo of the app showed it helping users find, reserve, and unlock OnStar enabled cars using the smartphone app. The app, which will launch early this year, will also be available for the iOS andAndroid platforms. “Research shows that the amount of mobile applications for the Android and iOS platforms is likely to double in the next 12 months,” OnStar President Linda Marshall said. “Customer demand is driving a new marketplace for a variety of automotive applications.

“With this step we believe we can broaden our portfolio, grow our business and enable our customers to achieve additional functionality from their vehicle using their computer, smartphone,tablet or other devices,” Marshall said. OnStar has previously worked with companies like Mapquest and Google to provide API-based solutions for the company’s eNav service. OnStar will make its API available in the first half of 2012. (Developers interested in the API should contact OnStar at developersonstar.com.) OnStar is also looking at incorporating Verizon 4G LTE into vehicles, using the mobile broadband to deploy all the services of OnStar to the cloud. A video demo showed Verizon’s Steve Schwenke Skyping from the back seat of the 4G-enabled Volt somewhere else on the show floor in to the press conference. Perhaps not surprisingly, the portion of the video that garnered the most interest was that one could play the popular game app Angry Birds on a screen in the back seat.

“It’s the ultimate babysitter,” joked one of the participants. Verizon’s 4G LTE connection through OnStar probably wouldn’t be a separate data plan, but would be rolled into the OnStar subscription.

Verizon Android Cell Phone – Updated at 6 p.m. PT Three of the nation’s four largest wireless carriers AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile say they use Carrier IQ’s controversial key-logging software, say they do not use it to monitor subscribers’ activities. The Carrier IQ program is an analytical tool, strictly to “improve wireless network and service performance,” not to track users’ personal data, said AT&T. Sprint said in a statement that Carrier IQ software helps “analyze our network performance and identify where we should be improving service,” but it does not “and cannot look at the contents of messages, photos, videos, etc., using this tool. The information collected is not sold and we don’t provide a direct feed of this data to anyone outside of Sprint.” T-Mobile, contacted by msnbc.com, said late Thursday it uses Carrier IQ strictly as a “diagnostic tool to troubleshoot device and network performance with the goal of enhancing network reliability and our customers’ experience.” The carrier “does not use this diagnostic tool to obtain the content of text, email or voice messages, or the specific destinations of a customers’ Internet activity, nor is the tool used for marketing purposes.” Verizon Wireless told msnbc.com it doesn’t put Carrier IQ “on our phones, nor do we use any Carrier IQ data.” Asked whether it uses similar programs from other companies, a Verizon Wireless spokesperson said it does not. Meanwhile, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., chairman of the Senate’s subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and Law, is asking Carrier IQ to clarify exactly what its software can and can’t do. One wireless industry representative, who asked to remain anonymous, said Carrier IQ software is “not an Orwellian plot to gather people’s information.

It’s to help us see if someone is dropping calls, where there are dead spots,” and other network issues; “it’s not to gather people’s personal information or to see what you’re doing or where you’re going.” Still, if the software can do those things, as one researcher contends, there are concerns about whether Carrier IQ is violating federal wiretap laws. If Carrier IQ has gotten the handset manufactures to install secret software that records keystrokes intended for text messaging and the Internet and are sending some of that information back somewhere, this is very likely a federal wiretap,” Paul Ohm, a former Justice Department prosecutor and law professor at the University of Colorado Law School, told Forbes. And that gives the people wiretapped the right to sue and provides for significant monetary damages. Carrier IQ, in a statement late Thursday, said it is “aware of various commentators alleging Carrier IQ has violated wiretap laws and we vigorously disagree with these assertions.”

Verizon Android Cell Phone – Less than six months after the Droid 3 saw a release, Verizon and Motorola are pushing out the Droid 4. Its basically a Droid Razr with a keyboard and smaller display; you can pick one up in stores within weeks. Smartphone shoppers wondering how it stacks up next to the Razr and the Galaxy Nexus will want to read on. Specs arent everything. Software is at least as instrumental in defining a product, and even the sum of the best parts can lead to a lackluster whole. Yet specs do matter they describe the blood and guts that power a device. Lets take a closer look at the blood and guts of these three phones The physical dimensions havent yet leaked for the Droid 4, but you can expect a thicker Droid Razr, as the slide-out keyboard will add girth. If Motorola has designed a thin keyboard, it will combine with the Razrs svelte frame to make the Droid 4 the worlds thinnest keyboard-laden smartphone.

Expect the Droid 4s display to be identical to the Droid 3s. Verizon documents list Super AMOLED for the Droid Razr, but the Droid 4s display gets no such designation. The displays four inch size and qHD resolution are confirmed; it will likely be using TFT LCD technology. Were taking liberties, as the exact model of the Droid 4 processor is unknown. We do know that its a dual-core 1.2GHz processor. As the Droid 4 has nearly identical hardware to the Razr, its probably the same TexasInstrumentsOMAP 4430 CPU.

All three phones are equal in RAM, with 1GB each. The internal storage and SD card capabilities in the Droid 4 are unknown, but the smart money is on another identical Razr spec 16GB with an SD slot. The US versions of these phones will all have identical download speeds on Verizons LTE network. International Galaxy Nexus owners will have to settle for HSPA. If AT&T or T-Mobile eventually offer the Galaxy Nexus, then HSPA could show in the states as well. The Droid 4 has the best battery of the three, by a small margin.

That doesnt guarantee the best battery life though, as software and other hardware will also determine uptime. The Droid 4 will have the same camera as the Droid Razr. Some reviewers were disappointed with its image quality, so those extra megapixels over the Galaxy Nexus wont guarantee a better camera. In Christopher Nolans Batman films, the Dark Knights suit is made of Kevlar.

The same material is coated on the back of the Droid Razr. The phone isnt bulletproof, but it is more likely to survive a drop. The Galaxy Nexuss stock Ice Cream Sandwich firmware is a huge selling point. Android is growing up with version 4.0, and the Galaxy Nexus will be the only phone running it for a month or two. It will be the only phone running an unmodified version of it for much longer than that.

The Droid 4s biggest differentiator is its slide-out keyboard. Despite the dominance of multitouch display phones, some smartphone users still want physical keys. The Droid 4 will launch as the best phone on the market that has a physical keyboard. When the Galaxy Nexus launches on Verizon it will be the best Android phone on the market; it might even bethe best phone on the market. Its combination of high-end hardware and cutting-edge software is unmatched. But if any Android phones can give it a run for its money, theyre these two Droids from Motorola. The Razr packs high-end specs into a ridiculously thin case, and the Droid 4 sets a new benchmark for keyboard-laden handsets. If we lived in a one-size-fits-all world, the Galaxy Nexus would be the clear choice. But since each customer has unique taste, your choice could just as easily be the Droid Razr or the Droid 4. Verizon Android Cell Phone – Amazon is getting a jump on Black Friday with a smartphone Penny Pincher sale. The Internet retailer has put all of its smartphones from Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T on sale for one cent. Shoppers can pick up the Motorola Droid Razr, which Verizon Wireless sells for 299 with a two-year contract, for single penny (and the same contract obligations). Other phones listed at a cent on Amazon’s Wireless store include the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic (199 at Sprint) and the BlackBerry Torch (99 at AT&T). Also, buyers who activate the hotspot feature on their phone purchase will receive a 100 Amazon gift card. The sale, which includes free two-day shipping, is valid through November 28. However, deals apply only to new subscribers; customers who already have a contract with that carrier are out of luck. T-Mobile smartphones aren’t included in the sale, nor is the AppleiPhone, which isn’t available at the Amazon Wireless store.

The sale could give Google a boost in the race to surpass Apple in the number of active devices. At theiPhone 4S launch event on October 4, Apple CEO Tim Cook said it had sold 250 million iOS devices up to that point, a figure that includes iPhones, iPads, andiPod Touches. However, more than 200 million Android devices have been activated around the world, Google announced last week at its Google Music event. Further, more than 550,000 devices are being activated every day, up from a daily tally of 500,000 in June and 400,000 in May.

What matters more money or marketshare? A new report from market research firm Gartner has phones running Googles Android operating system accounting for 52.5 percent of the worldwide smartphone market in the third quarter of 2011, giving it more than three times the share of its nearest global competitor Symbian, with a 16.9 percent share. (Apples iOS managed a third-place finish for the quarter, with a 15 percent share.) Overall, Gartner found that nearly 60.6 million Android phones were sold to customers during the quarter, compared to about 17.3 million iPhones. With figures like that, its easy to jump to a conclusion that Android is winning the smartphone wars after all, when a products share or sales tips over 50 percent, its generally viewed as a market-dominating force. And theres no question that Android is seeing considerable success, particularly entering into the end-of-year holiday season with a plethora of new tablet devices (like the Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet) and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich heading at consumers. But as Charlie Sheen can attest, theres more than one definition of winning. A report distributed to clients this weekend by Oppenheimer shows another interesting story it finds that, among Android handset makers, only HTC and Samsung seem to be making any money. Whats more, Apple appears to have captured roughly two thirds of the operating profit in the entire smartphone business a margin Oppenheimer believes will increase a bit in 2012. Even though Android got off to a rather fitful start (especially compared to the already-mature iPhone), Android has rapidly evolved its technology and interface to the point where it frequently rivals Apple, and in some cases exceeds Cupertinos efforts. The diversity of the Android hardware world does make for an uneven experience some devices perform well, while others are sluggish or eat batteries but for many consumers that diversity of devices is precisely the appeal of Android. Mobile users who want a smartphone with a QWERTY keypad for messaging or a 4-inch or larger screen simply have nothing to buy in the one-size-fits-all iOS world. Android has also worked hard to catch up with iOS on the interface and fit-and-finish department although Android still isnt as consistent as iOS, in a few instances Android now arguably exceeds Cupertinos efforts. And its not just consumers embracing Android, its developers too.

The Android Market now sports more than 320,000 apps compared to about 450,000 in the Apple App store. (Although, interestingly, over a third of Android apps have been removed from Android Market since they were published, compared to less than a quarter of apps released for iOS). For iOS and Android, the sheer number of apps available for each platform is ceasing to be an issue basically, if mobile users want an app, odds are it (or something close) is available for both platforms. Historically, Androids broad marketshare should translate to long-term success for the platform, giving it a large installed base of customers who, if they like their initial Android devices, are likely to stick with the platform (and their apps) when they move

Verizon Android Cell Phone – The San Francisco-based company, which counts 12 million users worldwide, is looking to expand its reach with operator deals similar to ones it has already struck with Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile in the U.S., said Kevin Mahaffey co-founder and CTO. By the end of the year, all Android phones shipped by T-Mobile in the U.S. will have Lookout’s software installed, Mahaffey said. Lookout also announced on Wednesday an agreement with the Australian operator Telstra, which will promote Lookout’s software in its section of the Android Market. Lookout offers a free version of its software with antivirus, data backup and missing device location features. A paid version includes remote data wipe and a privacy advisor, which scans applications and warns of ones that may have access to too much personal data, among others. It also has an application for Apple iOS, but without the antivirus features. About 30 percent of Lookout’s users come from non-English speaking regions, so Lookout plans to localize its application in languages such as German, Japanese, Spanish and Italian, Mahaffey said.

On Wednesday, Lookout released a localized version for U.K. users. Operators are interested in offering security software with the devices they sell, and Lookout is appealing because the basic version is free, Mahaffey said. There are only 1,000 or so malicious applications aimed at mobile phones, a very small number compared to malware for desktop computers. But hackers are showing growing interest in mobile devices. Hackers have modified legitimate Android applications with malicious functions and slipped them into third-party applications markets.

Perhaps the most notorious was DroidDream. More 50 applications within Google’s official Android Market were found to be contaminated with DroidDream, which copies information such as the phone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number and the SIM card’s International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) number and sent it to a remote server. Another concern of operators is that a malicious application could infect many phones and be hard to remove, which could be very costly to operators, Mahaffey said. Verizon Android Cell Phone – Phones and tablets loaded with the Android 4.0 operating system start arriving in stores soon, but when will existing phones get the update and wich models will be left out in the cold? Here’s a rundown of the devices expected to get Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich mobile OS first. Galaxy Nexus The newest “Google phone” is expected sometime soon from Samsung and is the only new phone known for sure that will come pre-loaded with Ice Cream Sandwich. Verizon is currently taking emails from those that want to be the first to get their hands on the new Android paired with the curved Galaxy Nexus with its 1.2 Ghz processor, NFC chip and 1080p HD video capability. A leaked screenshot purported to be from Verizon seems to show a planned Black Friday launch for the phone. Nexus S Google has confirmed it’s working on an Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Nexus S. But that is apparently as far back as the update will go on the Google and Nexus line. There will be no ICS for the Nexus One or G1. If you don’t feel like waiting for Google to roll the new Android out to your Nexus S, my colleague Sarah Mitroff found one way to get it now. LG Optimus 2X LG confirmed via its Facebook page that it is “in the process of planning the ICS OS update for the LG Optimus 2X as well as other LG high-end smartphones.” No word on what those other high-end phones might be, but my bet is we’ll see something new from LG with ICS in the next few months.

Motorola Motorola says it will be upgrading the Droid Razr, Razr, Xoom and Droid Bionic to Ice Cream Sandwich. The exact timing isn’t clear, but the company has indicated that it will be no sooner than six weeks after Google’s official release of the update. Sony Xperia phones Sony hasn’t released many details, but the Dutch division of Sony Ericsson confirms via Facebook that Xperia phones will get Ice Cream Sandwich. There’s no indication of when that might happen. Current Gingerbread phones? Google says that Ice Cream Sandwich should theoretically work on any Android 2.3 Gingerbread device, but when and if each model gets the update is up to the carriers.

Further, Horizon Mobile users will be able to choose their own voice and data plans which will be completely separate from their corporate plan, managed by the users company. As per sources, VMware claims that the solution helps to securely provision, manage and de-provision a corporate mobile workspace (email, applications, data, etc.) of a customer that uses an Android device. Handset makers LG and Samsung will reportedly be building the mobile phones containing this solution. According to reports, Janet Schijns, vice president, Business Solutions Group, Verizon Wireless has said that Verizon Wireless and VMware are delivering a compelling new mobile security and management experience leveraging their most reliable 3G and 4G LTE network along with the proven virtualization and cloud computing platform leadership of VMware to address this enterprise trend.

Verizon Android Cell Phone – Specifications aside, the Galaxy S IIs display and performance make it a formidable competitor to its rivals. Like other top smartphones, the S II has a dual-core processor, but it also sports a gorgeous SuperAMOLED Plus display, whose rich, vibrant colors outshine any smartphone screen available today. I especially like the phones new Touch Wiz 4.0 interface, which vastly improves scrolling through the numerous home screens that offer useful widgets everywhere. And the S II offers the latest Android Gingerbread (2.3.5) operating system, which is a joy to use. Its a snap to set up your email and social media accounts. I loaded up my test microSD card on the S II (which doesnt come with an included card thats a demerit) and played the movie Limitless. It looked and played fantastically on the S II, which also plays and records 1080p HD video. High-def looks stunning on this phone, as good as on a medium-sized flats-creen TV. I also cranked up a variety of MP3 tunes on the phone, which sounded full and rich as good what youd hear on a top standalone MP3 player.

The audio and video on the S II top the Bionic and its a huge improvement from my Galaxy S. The S IIs display also shines during Web browsing, which was pretty fast on AT&Ts HSPA network, though not as quick as the Droid Bionic on Verizons 4G LTE network. But AT&T does let you multitask, so I could easily surf the Web and make a call or listen to music. Like the new iPhone, Bionic and Amaze, the Galaxy S II has an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera that takes fantastic photos. Call clarity on the S II is great, as is the battery life, giving me more than nine hours on one charge with a lot of use. Ive now tried the Bionic, Amaze and S II the three top Android rivals to the iPhone 4S. I wasnt bowled over by the bulky Amaze, but the Droid Bionic and Galaxy S II are great phones. I give the nod to the Galaxy S II as the top Android smartphone right now, because of its cinematic display and great touch interface, as well as its light weight and slim profile.

Verizon Wireless made two announcements Monday, while AT&T made a separate announcement of a service called Toggle, which allows enterprise apps to run on any Android phone that a user chooses. Separately, Verizon announced the Private Applications Store for Business that allows companies to run in-house or third-party apps on any smartphone or tablet on any network. It will be offered later this year, with pricing set on a per-user/per-month basis, although Verizon didn’t specify how much. Also, Verizon introduced its Mobile Unified Communications Client to connect Android smartphones over the Verizon network with a business’ existing telephone system. That means Android smartphone users can place calls on the device from their work number, even while out of the office, with the calls routed through the company’s IP PBX system. The advantage is lower costs on international calls and intra-company calls. Verizon created a docking station, sold separately, to connect phones running the Android mobile operating system and using the UC Client to a company’s Ethernet. The UC client is now available for 7 per month per user, while the docking station costs 125.

The UC Client supports the Droid X, Droid X2, Droid 2, Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro, all of which are Android phones from Motorola. Others devices will follow. The UC Client works with IP PBX software from leading makers, including Cisco Unified Communications 6.1.4 and above and Avaya Communications Manager 5.2 and above. Carriers are offering these services and products because of a major transition to Android and iPhone mobile devices over BlackBerry phones from Research In Motion, which relies on an added security layer with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Forrester, in a recent survey, found that more workers are using iPhones and Android-based smartphones than BlackBerries, and that nearly half of workers are using smartphones that they chose, not devices recommended by their IT departments. Even if an IT shop requires a certain phone, workers will still bring in a second of their choosing to do work-related tasks, Forrester found.

The “bring your own phone” trend leaves room for services and products from the carriers to help companies adapt to the changes, analysts said. These business-focused perks make the Stratosphere a good alternative to the Motorola Droid Pro line, as well as the Motorola XPRT. The Stratosphere won’t be mistaken for amultimedia-friendly smartphone like its Samsung Galaxy S II brethren. Verizon Android Cell Phone – T-Mobile didn’t say how much the tablet will cost, nor when it will go on sale, but did say the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and another tablet, the 7-inch T-Mobile Springboard with Google, will be available “in time for the holidays” at T-Mobile retail stores and through its web store. The court hearing on the preliminary injunction sought by Apple is scheduled for Oct. 13. T-Mobile asked the court on Sept. 28 for leave to submit a brief of amicus curiae (”friend of the court”) to prevent the injunction, as it would affect its holiday sales this year. T-Mobile, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, did not immediately respond to an e-mail asking if the company had a contingency plan should Apple obtain a preliminary injunction. Apple petitioned the U.S. District Court of Northern District of California, San Jose Division, in July for a preliminary injunction prohibiting Samsung Electronics and its U.S.

entities from selling, offering to sell, or importing into the U.S. some products including the Galaxy S 4G and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet computer, claiming these products infringed its patents. Samsung is currently involved in a number of lawsuits with Apple in different regions. While it is the fourth phone to land on Verizons LTE 4G platform, it is the first Verizon LTE phone with a dual core processor. Accepting the letters is good news for Verizon and T-Mobile because it means Judge Lucy Koh will at least consider their arguments in Samsungs defense. It doesnt, however, mean the court will act on the letters, or avoid imposing an injunction. Verizon and T-Mobile to court Can you hear me now? Apple and Samsung have been locked in a legal battle over patent infringement claims for several months.

Both companies have alleged that the others mobile devices use patented technologies without proper licensing, and have filed lawsuits against each other in the U.S. and other countries. Verizon and T-Mobile both argued that blocking the sale of Samsungs Galaxy phones would hurt their businesses because they rely on the handsets for their high speed data networks. While Verizon simply submitted its letter to the court, T-Mobile requested to participate in an injunction hearing set for October 13. A German court recently upheld an injunction blocking the sale of Samsungs Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in the country. Samsung has filed an appeal in hopes of overturning that ruling. Apple was also awarded a temporary injunction through a Dutch court blocking the sale of some Galaxy devices in the European Union, and Samsung has agreed to postpone sales of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Australia until the end of September, but now is facing the possibility of an injunction in that country, if it cant work out a deal with Apple soon. In an effort to avoid an injunction in Australia, Samsung said it wanted to negotiate with Apple, and has even gone so far as to say it would strip features out of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet model it hopes to sell in the country.
